Bavaria’s draw against Augsburg abnormal

Normally it works like this: FC Bayern hire players from competitors who then play well against their former club, also like to score goals. In Munich, however, former Bayern player Felix Götze made his first Bundesliga appearance for FC Augsburg in the 61 minute. And the 20-year-old central defender ensured shortly before the end that his new club punished the bad chance evaluation of his old club.

After 1-1 (0-0), coach Niko Kovac had to explain why his team had not won for the first time after a compulsory game.

Felix Götze dedicates goals to brother Mario

Götzes curious goal with the chest („I tried to throw all body parts into it„) turned the game upside down. Then he had to listen to jokes that he shouldn’t turn wrong in the catacombs and go into the Bayern cabin. Only four months ago he had played for the Munich team, albeit mostly in the training teams. Brother Mario Götze also came by as a spectator last season. Felix Götze also dedicated his goal to him: „The first call goes to him. I wouldn’t be here without him – without his tips. The goal is for him“.

The reaction of the Bavarians to the ex’s goal was friendly. „Felix is a really good guy,“ said Mats Hummels. On any other evening one would have been happy for him too. But, Hummels remarked sarcastically, „it was unnecessary to do that today“. He meant the gate.

It was to be heard: The reactions of the Bayern players to the sobering 1:1 varied between gallows humor and self-criticism, but nobody seemed depressed. Augsburg had done quite well, had attacked courageously and early, but overall it was their own fault. „We rotated a bit, of course,“ said Manuel Neuer, „but we also played out really good chances“.

At least some players didn’t want to rule out the fact that the starting eleven rotation contributed to the draw. Of course, Robert Lewandowski is a world-class striker, said Hummels about the bench press on Tuesday. Sandro Wagner, however, has also had a good goal quota so far, he just might not be so much in the rhythm. Coach Kovac defended the fact that David Alaba was only substituted after the break with the fact that he currently only has two healthy backs „which we have to take care of somewhere“. Leon Goretzka didn’t really force himself on the team for further tasks in this position.

Those who had missed the most chances were also the ones who were most annoyed. Renato Sanches, for example, who celebrated his breakthrough with FC Bayern last Wednesday in the Champions League in Lisbon, was late on several occasions. „I played a good game, but missed some chances. I think it could be even better,“ said the 21-year-old with an unsatisfied face.

Sanches‘ appearances had provided for stimulation. But despite the many fast Bayern players like Serge Gnabry or Arjen Robben, it was not unusual for the pace of the game to be lacking and the game often splashed away.

On the one hand, this may have been due to the fan protest, which also depressed the mood in Munich in the first 20 minutes of the game. In addition, the officially sold out stadium this time showed unusually large gaps in the ranks, apparently this time many annual ticket holders had stayed at home.

Mood? For three minutes plus After For three minutes plus injury time

Something like a derby mood between the Upper Bavarians and the Swabians only came up after Götzes goal, for three minutes plus stoppage time. Suddenly the Bavarians were in a hurry to play forward. The hurry came too late. When it got fast, this led to one-on-one situations with Augsburg’s Andreas Luthe. The actually injured, surprisingly fast recovered goalkeeper remained except against the 1:0 goalscorer Robben winner, and kept the FCA thus for a long time in the game. In Munich, that’s also usually the other way round: The guest keepers make mistakes, Manuel Neuer plays confidently. This time, however, the 32-year-old did not look good at the equaliser. He refused to assign blame: „I called,“ he said, but a team-mate – Niklas Süle – stood in his way and could not catch the ball because of the collision. Despite Süle’s help, it was an unusual new mistake.
